Today’s advice isn’t necessary, at least according to some people. They’re wrong. When you give your character a skill that doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the plot, it can seem extemporaneous. But think about it: would Marty McFly still be himself if he didn’t have a skateboarding skill? Giving your character skills can add voracity and interest that enrich your story.
