SPP249 Deep Thinking

We all want to go fast. We’re writing expansive stories, marketing them, building relationships with readers, and managing businesses. It’s easy to overlook a simple but vital task: thinking deeply about what you’re doing. You can solve problems by doing less if you take time to think it through.

  • Deep thinking can dramatically transform your life by exploring how you feel about things, and how you DO things when you aren’t thinking about it.
  • Dave is, by nature, a deep thinker. He and Sean talk about one of his dark characters and how Dave think about his characters, their motivations, and their actions in his stories.
  • Deep thinking is hard work. The ability to turn off everything isn’t easy for everyone, and sometimes, taking yourself OUT of your environment can help you get started.
  • Thinking can be exhausting. It even gives Sean rashes.
  • If you consider your work or life as a chess board, deep thinking is like taking a view of the whole board rather than being a piece on the board.
  • You should NEVER feel guilty for taking time to think. It’s easy to get caught up in the mentality of production, but if you stay there, you’ll undermine the work you do. There is value in thinking.
  • Sean shares several ways he can ‘zone out’ during the day and think, and it usually involves making sure his phone is not nearby.
  • Notebooks are a great way to capture ideas; you don’t have to carry one around. Get a few, small notebooks and put them where you spend your time.
  • Eliminating distractions is a very important practice, and it means different things for different people.
  • Health deeply affects your ability to think. You might not want to hear it, but exercise and wellness matter to your brain.
  • It’s okay to be a little selfish with your time. Set regular hours for yourself and time for your family or friends.
  • Dave finds it helpful to spur deep thinking by talking to others. A new perspective is helpful to send your brain to new places.
  • If you aren’t a native deep thinker, start small!
